Director of the Centre on Building Sustainable Value, Executive Director, Research Network for Business Sustainability.
Dr. Bansal has been researching social and environmental issues since she completed her doctorate in 1996 at the University of Oxford. Her research has yielded over 25 peer reviewed academic publications, and a book titled Business and the Natural Environment. Her research has also been cited in the popular press including The Wall Street Journal, The National Post, Globe and Mail and The Independent. At the heart of Bansal’s research is the argument that a firm’s social, environmental and financial performance are deeply connected in the long run.
Professor Bansal teaches strategic management, sustainability and international business across all levels of the business program, including undergraduates, MBAs, PhDs, and executives. She was appointed a UWO Faculty Scholar (2008) for her contributions to research, teaching and service. She was also a finalist for the Aspen Institute’s Faculty Pioneer award (2006 and 2008) and nominated for the YMCA Women of Distinction Award (2007).
In recent years, Dr. Bansal has turned some of her attention to strengthening the ties between research and practice. One such initiative, the Research Network for Business Sustainability, is bringing together University researchers, consultants, NGOs, and corporations across Canada to identify the key questions that will unlock some of the sustainability challenges. As well, she has been asked to direct Ivey’s research and outreach efforts in sustainability by Directing the Centre for Building Sustainable Value. She also advised Ivey Connects, the student-run organization that connects Ivey to the community, for its first 6 years.
Prior to academia, Dr. Bansal worked for 7 years in management consulting and for the federal and provincial governments in Edmonton, Alberta. She has been married over 20 years to a pure mathematician, which means that work-related discussions are kept short. This leaves more time for good food, good wine, and some very good friends.
